Cinq mois après la parution du Jan Karski de Yannick Haenel (Gallimard), Claude Lanzmann s’en prend vivement à cet ouvrage sur un résistant catholique polonais qui tenta en vain de sensibiliser l’administration américaine à l’extermination des Juifs.

Polémique bien tardive alors même qu’Arte programmait la rediffusion de Shoah et annonçait un documentaire de Lanzmann sur Karski !

L’événement passerait inaperçu s’il ne permettait au milieu littéraire parisien de se repaître d’une petite poussée de fièvre médiatique.

Les adversaires ont le poids de leurs impostures.

D’un côté, le directeur des Temps modernes dont Le lièvre de Patagonie a été un best seller en 2009 ; de l’autre, Yannick Haenel et Philippe Sollers qui, à défaut d’être un éditeur, est un efficace proxénète éditorial.

L’objet du scandale ?

Un ennuyeux docu-fiction estampillé roman, prix Interallié 2009, succès critique et public.

Le « produit » est composé de trois parties. Dans la première, l’auteur résume et commente les propos de Karski dans Shoah. Pour la deuxième, les Mémoires de Karski (New York, 1944) lui servent de matière première. La troisième partie, bien insipide au demeurant, doit tout en revanche à l’imagination de Haenel.

Et le tout est écrit à la margarine.

La médiocrité de la chose ne relève pas de l’indignation mais de l’ennui. Que la presse ait été louangeuse n’a rien de choquant. A l’instar des chiens parisiens, certains critiques littéraires « font où on leur dit de faire » et finissent, hélas, par se pisser dessus. Il ne faut ni s’en étonner ni s’en désoler. C’est ainsi. Et depuis si longtemps ! Nul n’a d’ailleurs relevé les vives réserves exprimées par l’historienne Annette Wieviorka. Le commerce, équitable ou non, n’a que faire de la vérité historique.
